A Change of Name Deed — also known as a Deed Poll — is a legal document that formally records a change in a person’s name. It is the most widely accepted method of changing your name in England and Wales, and is recognised by government departments, banks, the Passport Office, and other institutions.

Anyone over the age of 16 can change their name by deed poll. Parents or those with parental responsibility can change the name of a child under 16, subject to the consent of all those who hold parental responsibility.

While it is technically possible to draw up a deed poll yourself, having it professionally prepared by a solicitor carries additional weight. A solicitor-prepared deed is signed as a formal legal document, witnessed, and can be enrolled at the Senior Courts Costs Office — which makes it part of the public record.

Once you have your deed poll, you will need to notify the relevant institutions of your name change. This typically includes the Passport Office (to obtain a new passport in your new name), the DVLA, HM Revenue and Customs, your bank, your employer, and your GP.

For immigration purposes, changing your name is particularly significant. If your name differs between your passport and other identity documents, it is essential to update your records and notify the Home Office of the change if you hold leave to remain or other immigration status.
