The Religious Worker Visa is available to overseas nationals who wish to come to the UK to work for a faith community in a religious capacity — either in a paid or voluntary role.
Eligible roles include ministers of religion, pastoral workers, and those undertaking non-pastoral religious work such as supporting a religious community in a practical or administrative capacity where the role requires religious affiliation.
You must be sponsored by a UK religious organisation that holds a valid Religious Worker sponsor licence. Your sponsor will issue a Certificate of Sponsorship confirming the details of your role, the duration of the placement, and whether the position is paid or voluntary.
The Religious Worker Visa is initially granted for up to two years and can be extended from within the UK. There is no direct path to settlement under this route.
Faith communities seeking to sponsor overseas religious workers must first apply for a sponsor licence. They must demonstrate genuine organisational capacity, a legitimate need for the worker’s role, and robust HR systems to comply with their sponsorship duties.
Terence Ray Solicitors assists religious organisations with sponsor licence applications and supports individual applicants in preparing their visa documentation.
