Government Authorised Exchange Visa

The Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) Visa allows overseas nationals to come to the UK to take part in approved exchange programmes that promote knowledge and skills, cultural exchange, or research.

This route is run through approved government-backed schemes. Common examples include internship and research placement programmes at universities, charitable work schemes, and professional development programmes. The overseas national must be sponsored by an authorised body that manages the relevant scheme.

The GAE route is not for standard employment. The placement must be for the participant’s benefit — gaining knowledge, skills, or experience — rather than to fill a permanent employment need. Participants are generally paid at or above the national minimum wage, depending on the programme.

Visas under this route are granted for the duration of the programme, up to a maximum of two years. Extensions are not normally possible.

The Home Office expects the sponsoring body to maintain robust oversight of the programme and ensure that all participants are carrying out genuine exchange activities rather than acting as low-cost substitute workers.

Terence Ray Solicitors advises organisations managing GAE programmes on compliance and individual participants on their visa requirements.
