Youth Mobility Scheme Visa

The Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) — sometimes called a Working Holiday Visa — allows young people from eligible countries to live and work in the UK for up to two years.

To be eligible, you must be between 18 and 30 years old (though some nationalities have an upper age limit of 35), hold a passport from a participating country, and have the required level of savings to support yourself when you first arrive. The current savings requirement is £2,530.

The participating countries and territories include Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and several others, subject to bilateral agreements. The list is periodically updated, and places are often allocated by ballot in some country agreements.

Under the YMS, you can work for any UK employer in almost any role without requiring sponsorship. You can also study for up to six months and travel freely during your stay. You cannot access public funds or work as a professional sportsperson.

The YMS is a popular route for young overseas nationals who want to experience living and working in the UK. It cannot be extended and can only be used once.

If you are approaching the end of your Youth Mobility Scheme leave and wish to remain in the UK, you may be able to switch to the Skilled Worker route if you have a qualifying job offer.
