Permitted Paid Engagements

The Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) route allows certain overseas professionals and specialists to travel to the UK for a short visit and receive payment from a UK source for a specific, pre-arranged engagement.

This is an exception to the general rule that visitors cannot be paid by a UK source. PPE activities include giving a lecture at a UK higher education institution, examining or assessing students, carrying out advocacy work in a court or tribunal, or giving a performance as an entertainer, artist, or musician.

To qualify, the engagement must have been arranged before you travel to the UK, and it must be in your own area of expertise. The visit must be for a maximum of one month, and the engagement itself is typically a single event or short series.

Unlike the Standard Visitor Visa, a PPE applicant must hold a specific endorsement in their visit visa — standard visitor visas do not automatically cover PPE activities. This means the purpose and nature of the engagement must be clearly set out in your application.

Many applicants fall into difficulty because they apply for a standard visitor visa without flagging the paid nature of their engagement. This can result in being refused entry at the border.

At Terence Ray Solicitors, we advise professionals, institutions, and visiting speakers on how to structure their applications correctly to avoid complications.
