Visit to Marry/ Form a Civil Partnership

The Marriage Visitor Visa is designed for those who want to come to the UK to get married or enter into a civil partnership, or to give notice of their intention to marry. This is the option for couples who will not remain in the UK once the wedding or ceremony has taken place. The applicant must have a definite intention to leave the UK once they have fulfilled their primary purpose of the visit, and the visa will be granted for a maximum period of 6 months within which the marriage or civil partnership must take place. It does not allow the applicant to settle in the UK, to switch to a spouse visa from within the UK, to work, study or have access to public funds.

You must be aged 18 or over, in a genuine relationship and intend to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of your arrival. You must also demonstrate that you are free to marry, have made suitable arrangements for your marriage ceremony or civil partnership registration and that you have sufficient financial support to stay in the UK without working or claiming public funds.

You will need a valid passport and supporting documents such as proof of your ceremony booking or venue confirmation. If you have been married or in a civil partnership before, you must be able to show that the previous marriage or partnership has legally ended. Additional documents include bank statements or evidence of your funds to show that you can pay for your costs, evidence of your relationship with your partner and return travel. Applications are made online from outside the UK.The fee is currently £127, and most decisions are made within 3 weeks. You will also need to attend a biometric appointment to give fingerprints and a photograph.

Once in the UK, you will have to give notice of your marriage or civil partnership at a register office at least 29 days before your ceremony. You cannot switch onto a Spouse or Partner visa in the UK from a Marriage Visitor Visa.
