UK Medical Visa

A UK Medical Visa is for people who need to travel to the UK to receive private medical treatment, to be an organ donor or to receive NHS treatment where the costs are covered by a reciprocal healthcare agreement. You can normally get this visa for up to 6 months but if your treatment will take longer you can apply for an 11-month visa or if necessary extend this for a further 6 months. You must be able to show that you have made arrangements to receive medical treatment in the UK and you intend to leave the UK when your treatment is finished.

To be eligible, you must be able to show UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that you have a genuine medical condition that needs treatment in the UK, and suitable arrangements have been made with a UK doctor or hospital. You must have enough money to pay for the cost of your treatment, travel and stay in the UK without having to work or claim public funds, and not be a risk to public health. You must also be able to show you intend to leave the UK after your treatment, or when your visa expires.

To apply for a medical visa, you’ll need to give evidence that you’re eligible, such as a letter from a UK doctor or consultant, stating the nature of your diagnosis, treatment, the type and duration of treatment, as well as an estimated cost. You’ll also need to show evidence of funds such as bank statements, medical insurance or a letter from a sponsor showing that you can cover the cost of your treatment and stay in the UK. If you’re receiving treatment under a reciprocal healthcare arrangement, you will need an authorisation form from your government.

If you are coming to the UK to donate an organ, you can apply for a medical visit visa as an organ donor. You must provide evidence from a UK transplant specialist or hospital that confirms you are a donor match or being tested to donate an organ and have a close personal or genetic relationship with the person receiving the organ. The visa would be valid for the time required for donation and recovery.

Family members must apply separately if they wish to accompany the patient, unless they qualify under a different visa category. At TRS Solicitors, our immigration lawyers can help you prepare your medical visa application, ensure your documents meet UKVI standards, and guide you through the process with care and efficiency—so you can focus on your health and recovery.
