Naturalisation

Naturalisation is the most common route to British citizenship for adults who have settled in the UK. It allows those with Indefinite Leave to Remain or other settled status to formally become British citizens.

To qualify for naturalisation, you must be aged 18 or over, be of good character, and have spent the required period living in the UK. In most cases, you need to have lived in the UK for at least five years, including the final year immediately before your application date.

For the 12 months prior to your application, you must not have been outside the UK for more than 90 days. For the five-year qualifying period overall, the total period of absence should not exceed 450 days.

You must also pass the Life in the UK Test (unless you are exempt due to age or health) and demonstrate English language ability to the required level — typically B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Spouses or civil partners of British citizens may be able to apply after three years of residence, subject to slightly different absence thresholds.

Naturalisation grants you a British passport, the right to vote in all UK elections, and the ability to pass British citizenship to your children in future.

At Terence Ray Solicitors, we guide you through the naturalisation process from start to finish — reviewing your eligibility, advising on absences, and ensuring your application is correctly completed.
