Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the UK Government introduced special humanitarian visa schemes to allow Ukrainian nationals and their close family members to come to the UK.
Two main routes were established: the Ukraine Family Scheme and the Homes for Ukraine Scheme. Both routes are currently closed to new applicants, but those already in the UK under these schemes continue to have valid leave to remain.
Under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, Ukrainians were sponsored by approved UK households. Grants of leave were typically made for 18 months or three years, depending on when the application was made. Extensions and re-applications have been available for those already in the UK.
Eligible Ukrainians in the UK under these schemes have the right to work, access NHS healthcare, claim benefits, and enrol children in school. They are not subject to the No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) condition that applies to many other visa categories.
If you are a Ukrainian national currently in the UK under one of these schemes and your leave is approaching expiry, it is important to seek legal advice as soon as possible. Options for further leave — including switching to other visa categories — vary depending on individual circumstances.
