UK Ancestry Visa

The UK Ancestry Visa allows Commonwealth citizens who have a grandparent born in the United Kingdom — including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man — to live and work in the UK for up to five years.

To qualify, you must be a Commonwealth citizen aged 17 or over, have a grandparent (not great-grandparent) who was born in the UK, be able to demonstrate that you are willing and able to work, and intend to take up or seek employment during your stay.

One of the most important elements is the employment intention requirement. You do not need a confirmed job offer, but you must be able to show a realistic prospect of finding work. This can be evidenced through your professional qualifications, work history, and any job offers or correspondence with potential employers.

The UK Ancestry route grants five years of leave to remain, during which you can work for any employer in any occupation without restriction. You can also bring your spouse or partner and dependent children with you.

After five years of continuous residence in the UK, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. You will need to satisfy the standard settlement requirements, including passing the Life in the UK Test and meeting the English language requirement.

Terence Ray Solicitors can assist you in establishing your eligibility, gathering evidence of your ancestry, and preparing your application. Ancestry applications require certified documentation, and expert advice can help avoid delays.
