Academics

Academic visitors — including researchers, lecturers, and visiting professors — can travel to the UK on a Business Visitor Visa to carry out a range of permitted activities at UK universities, research institutions, and other educational bodies.

Permitted academic activities include carrying out research for your own purposes, examining students, participating in conferences, sharing knowledge at lectures or seminars, and collaborating with UK academic colleagues. These activities must not result in you producing work for a UK institution that would normally be carried out by a UK employee.

If you are a Professor or researcher who has been invited to share knowledge at a UK university for a short period and will be paid by an overseas institution — not by the UK host — you may qualify under the Business Visitor route. More extended academic activities may require a different visa category such as the Skilled Worker Visa.

The boundary between permitted academic visiting and carrying out paid work in the UK can be unclear, and it is important to take advice before you travel to ensure you are entering on the correct basis.

Universities and research institutions regularly contact Terence Ray Solicitors for advice on the immigration routes available to international collaborators, visiting academics, and research fellows.
