Graduate Trainee

The Graduate Trainee route under the Global Business Mobility framework is designed for recent graduates who are being transferred from an overseas entity to a UK branch as part of a structured graduate training programme.

To qualify, the trainee must be a graduate who has worked for the overseas sponsor entity for at least three months. They must be coming to the UK to undertake a specific graduate training scheme leading to a managerial or specialist role within the business. The UK sponsor must hold a valid GBM sponsor licence.

A Graduate Trainee Visa is granted for up to one year, making it a short-term route. It is not extendable, and it does not lead to settlement. If the trainee wishes to remain in the UK after the visa expires, they would need to qualify under a different route — typically the Skilled Worker Visa.

The salary threshold for this route is lower than the standard Senior or Specialist Worker route, reflecting the graduate-level nature of the role.

This route is particularly popular with large multinational corporations that have formalised graduate rotation programmes. However, the placement in the UK must be genuine and form part of a documented training scheme.

At Terence Ray Solicitors, we assist companies and their HR teams in understanding the requirements for this route and preparing thorough visa applications for their graduate trainees.
