A Frontier Worker Permit is available to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens who were working in the UK before 31 December 2020 but lived in another country — and who wish to continue working in the UK on a cross-border basis after Brexit.
This permit was introduced under the terms of the EU Withdrawal Agreement. It protects the rights of those who were already established as frontier workers before the end of the Brexit transition period, allowing them to continue their cross-border working arrangements.
To qualify, you must have been working in the UK — whether employed or self-employed — and habitually residing in an EU, EEA, or Swiss country before 31 December 2020. You must have genuinely been a frontier worker at that time.
The permit is free to apply for and is granted indefinitely, subject to continuing to fulfil the conditions. You must continue to work in the UK and live in an EU/EEA/Swiss country. If you stop frontier working or move to the UK, your permit may no longer be valid.
Applications are made online, and you must provide evidence of your frontier working status before the end of 2020, including payslips, employment contracts, or self-employment records.
If you were a frontier worker before Brexit and have not yet applied for a permit, you should do so as soon as possible. Terence Ray Solicitors can advise you on eligibility and assist with your application.
