The Seasonal Worker Visa allows overseas nationals to come to the UK to work in agriculture — primarily fruit and vegetable picking — or in horticulture and poultry processing, on a short-term, seasonal basis.
This route operates through a small number of Home Office-approved scheme operators, who recruit and manage seasonal workers on behalf of UK farms and agricultural businesses. Individuals must apply through one of these approved operators rather than directly to the Home Office.
The visa is granted for up to six months. Workers must leave the UK before their visa expires and must intend to return home at the end of their placement. There is no route to settlement or long-term stay under this category.
The Seasonal Worker scheme has been an important source of agricultural labour since Brexit, replacing the free movement of European workers. Places are allocated through the scheme operators and are generally competitive.
Overseas workers should be aware that legitimate Seasonal Worker Scheme operators will never charge workers a fee for placement. If you have been asked to pay to participate, you should report this and seek independent legal advice.
Terence Ray Solicitors can advise on the requirements for this route and help workers understand their rights while employed in the UK.
