International Sportsperson Visa

The International Sportsperson Visa allows elite athletes, sportspeople, and coaches from overseas to come to the UK to compete, train, or coach at the highest level.

To qualify, you must be endorsed by the relevant UK governing body for your sport. The governing body will assess whether you are at an elite level, whether your role will contribute to the development of your sport in the UK, and whether there is a genuine need for a non-settled person to fill the role.

This visa is appropriate for professional athletes competing in the UK, overseas coaches working with UK teams or clubs, and sports instructors or professionals employed at elite institutions. It can be used for both short-term visits and longer-term placements.

Visas are typically granted for up to three years and can be extended. There is a route to settlement for international sportspeople who have lived and worked in the UK for five continuous years.

The endorsement process can take time and requires the governing body to be satisfied of the athlete’s elite status. Supporting evidence — such as competition results, rankings, and contracts — forms the core of the endorsement submission.

Terence Ray Solicitors works with athletes, clubs, and sporting organisations to navigate the endorsement and visa process smoothly.
