Certified Legal Translations

Certified legal translations are translations of legal or official documents that are accompanied by a formal declaration by the translator confirming the accuracy and completeness of the translation. They are typically required when submitting foreign-language documents to UK courts, government departments, or official bodies.

Common documents that require certified translation include birth, marriage, and death certificates, passports and national identity documents, divorce decrees and court orders, academic certificates and professional qualifications, and business registration documents.

A certified translation is not the same as a notarised translation. Certification confirms that the translation is accurate; notarisation is a separate process involving a notary public who certifies the translator’s identity and signature. Some applications — particularly those involving overseas authorities — may require both.

The Home Office and other UK immigration authorities require all foreign-language documents submitted with visa and settlement applications to be accompanied by a certified translation in English. Submitting uncertified translations can lead to delays or refusals.
